The 154th anniversary of the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was marked this past Saturday in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The treaty formally ended the war between the United States and Mexico. Mexico ceded much of what is now the American southwest, including New Mexico, to the U.S.

Preserved by the document were the land rights of Mexican citizens, which included members of the state's Pueblo tribes. But Mexican and Pueblo landowners have faced uphill battles having their rights recognized, a situation some hope will be corrected by Congress.
