A man accused of raping five Alaska Native women was sentenced on Friday to a maximum of 30 years in prison by an Alaska state judge who accepted a plea deal.

Gregory Poindexter had pleaded no contest to one count of sexual assault of the five women and one count of kidnapping three of the women. A judge in Anchorage was not convinced he would have been convicted on the original indictment of 18 counts or that his case could withstand appeal.

Many Alaska Natives said they were disappointed with the arrangement.

The murders of several Native women are still unsolved.
