Natives in Mont. prisons a disparity

MONDAY, JANUARY 14, 2002 Native inmates in Montana make up 20 percent of the state prison population even though American Indians are just 6.2 percent of the general population. Domestic violence, alcohol, bias, lack of jobs and little economic opportunity are cited as some of the reasons for the disparity. According to a study by Mother Jones magazine, Native Americans have the second largest state prison incarceration rate in the nation, The number of inmates in jails in Indian Country is also growing.
