Mescalero Tribe to rehold elections

MONDAY, DECEMBER 3, 2001

The Mescalero Apache Nation of New Mexico has decided to hold elections for its tribal council again next week after the results of the first one were thrown out.

Voters of the tribe had elected Mark Chino as president. He is the son of the late Wendell Chino, who led the tribe until his death in 1998.

But the election was challenged by a losing candidate and the tribal council voided it because ballot machines instead of paper ones were used. A nwe election has been scheduled for December 10 but some tribal members are circulating a petition to have the old one resinstated.
