On Friday, May 26 2000, the Department of the Interior granted preliminary recognition to the Little Shell Chippewa Tribe in Montana. An government agent initially contacted the tribe for the census, but the majority of the tribe was on a hunting trip. Subsequently the portion of the Tribe's Turtle Mountain Reservation was sold when the chief did not want to take part of the land deal.

Years later, the tribe had scattered because of no land base. Members of the tribe have cited problems with whites and "full bloods." The Little Shell Tribe have received some assistance from the Crow Agency.
