MAY 24, 2001

Six American Indian activists arrested for protesting police inaction over the deaths of Oglala Lakota men and the sale of liquor to residents of the Pine Ridge Reservation appeared in Nebraska court on Tuesday to face continued prosecution.

Their cases had been held up while a judge determined if Nebraska had jurisdiction over the town of Whiteclay. The town borders the South Dakota border and the activists have argued it is rightfully part of the reservation.

The judge concluded otherwise and now trials will be scheduled for Oglala President John Yellow Bird Steele, former Nebraska Indian Commission member Frank LaMere, Gary Moore, Benedict Black Elk, and Tom Poor Bear and his brother Webster Poor Bear.
