Norton won't review Chinook recognition

MARCH 20, 2001 Secretary of Interior Gale Norton won't review the Clinton administration's decision to recognize the Chinook Tribe of Washington. Former Bureau of Indian Affairs head Kevin Gover signed a final determination recognizing the tribe on his last day in office on January 3. The Quinault Nation of Washington subsequently asked Norton to review the decision, arguing it was wrong. Norton said she won't review it and referred the tribe to the Interior Board of Indian Appeals. The Quinault Nation has also challenged the recognition of the Cowlitz Tribe. Members of the Cowlitz and Chinook tribes own allotments on the Quinault reservation. Get the Story:
