Pueblos city discuss land settlement

MARCH 19, 2001

In what might be a preview of the settlement the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation will offer to its neighbors, New Mexico's 19 Pueblos and the City of Albuquerque are dicussing a way to settle a dispute over property the tribes own.

The Pueblos own the old Indian School property in downtown Albuquerque and are planning on taking it into trust. The Bureau of Indian Affairs is clarifying its decision to do that after challenges raised by local interests.

In response, the Pueblos have agreed to allow the land to be regulated by local zoning and other land-use laws. In exchange, the city would provide municipal services to the site.

The agreement would last 50 years but detractors say it is vague. The City Council will consider it today.
