Murder trial begins in Florida

FEBRUARY 7, 2001 The trial of a Miccosukee tribal member accused of murdering his two sons began on Tuesday despite efforts made by the tribe to restrict investigation of the case on their Florida reservation. The tribe refused to let state investigators enter the reservation to question tribal members about the case of Kirk Douglas Billie. A federal court upheld the tribe's right to exclude others from their land. Billie faces the death penalty for the 1997 incident which resulted in the deaths of his sons. The alleged crime took place on state land. Get the Story:
