Court limits affirmative action

DECEMBER 1, 2000

The California Supreme Court on Thursday struck down a program that limited recruitment for contracting jobs to firms owned by women and minorities.

But in what is being considered an unusual outcome, four separate opinions on the issue were made by the court's justices. The main opinion, authored by Justice Janice Rogers Brown, was criticized in another written by Chief Justice Ronald M. George as attacking affirmative action too broadly.

George and another justice said the decision would undermine confidence in the court.
