The case of an American imprisoned in Peru for assisting a terrorist group is closed, according to the country's president.

President Alejandro Toledo was responding to questions by U.S. President George Bush regarding Lori Berenson. The former Massachusetts Institute of Technology student was convicted of aiding the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement in a failed plot to take over Peru's Congress.

Her first sentence by a military tribunal was overturned. Upon retrial, she was convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Human rights groups and her supporters have raised constitutional and other questions about her case. Bush asked Toledo to ensure she was being treated fair, said a White House spokesperson.

The Tupac Amaru movement is named for an Indian leader who was executed for arising against the Spanish in the 1700s.
