In The Hoop
TUESDAY, AUGUST 27, 2002 Welcome to In The Hoop, Indianz.Com's occasional column about assorted Indian issues. Trudell on Tour
If you're lucky enough to be in a town where legendary activist and poet John Trudell is performing, go check him out. In The Hoop has seen Trudell and his band Bad Dog perform several times and the experience is well worth it. The tour is in support of the recent release Bone Days. The album has gained some good reviews: Chris Nickson of All Music Guide called Trudell "a hypnotic speaker, with an impeccable feel for flow and the sound of words." But did you know that movie star and alleged Indian Angelina Jolie produced the album? She's credited on the liner notes and on Native America Calling yesterday, Trudell confirmed Ms. Lara Croft and ex-wife of Billy Bob Thornton -- out of the blue -- agreed to finance the record. Natives to Invade DC
Mark this date on your calendar: June 27, 2003. That's the day when one million (or approximately) Native Americans plan to descend on the nation's capitol for the Million Natives March on Washington D.C. "We ask that ALL grievances, we may hold against one another be set aside, so that we may ALL come together in peace. We all need to stand together as one, and show that no Nation/Tribe stands alone," an information flyer for the march reads. Congratulations go out to Ina Nez Perce, the recipient of an Environmental Protection Agency manager of the year award. Nez Perce is employed by the Fort Belknap Tribes of Montana. She was recognized for her work on environmental issues -- the tribes have many, including mine cleanup -- and was the only person in the state to receive one of the awards. Nez Perce received the A. Wade Vitalis Award, named for a member of the Oglala Lakota Tribe who passed on in August 1996. In Your Hoop
