In The Hoop
FRIDAY, JUNE 21, 2002 Welcome to In The Hoop, Indianz.Com's occasional column about assorted Indian issues. In The Hoop: The Scorecard
Is it Friday already? That means it's time for the weekly list of the movers and shakers in Indian Country and beyond. The Winners
Montie Deer - They say you're out the door at the National Indian Gaming Commission, but we think you're here to stay. Three more years! The Fast Runner - Moviegoers do appreciate all-Native films. If only Hollywood would listen instead of shilling out big bucks for blockbusters that go bust. Tribal Leaders - Keep demanding the Bush administration for independent oversight on trust management. And if you don't get it, walk away. There's nothing to lose! State of Texas - Thanks to a Congressional mishap, you get to prevail in court. We aren't else's surprised. The Losers
MGM / Windtalkers - You told a story that needed to be told. But no one wanted to hear it. Secretary of Interior Gale Norton - First the Special Master. Then the Special Trustee. Now the Court Monitor. When are you going to get around to attacking Ross Swimmer? Supreme Court - It's heartening to see you can retool some of your old positions. But this raises alarm about your pending moves on Indian trust. Indian Land - With all the scrutiny in Oklahoma and elsewhere, you can bet Neal McCaleb won't be taking you into trust any time soon! In The Middle
Multimedia Games - Your stock plummeted after evil Montie Deer's latest enforcement action. But it rose slight after a court acted. What happens next is anyone's guess. But it doesn't look good. MegaNanza Tribes - The new rules are here but Congress is itchy to act. You might be the reason! We're sure Indian Country will thank you for it. Trust Reform Task Force - You weren't a rubber-stamp for BITAM. But you might have endorsed something like it anyway. Siletz council member Rosemary Landis: "If it looks like a duck, acts like a duck and walks like a duck, it's a duck." Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and every other Western state - Pray for rain! But at least this puts Indian fire crews to work and gets them wages. In Your Hoop
