MONDAY, APRIL 15, 2002 The Arizona Republic is running a series on Indian health, noting the problems and disparate treatment provided to Native Americans. The first installation of "Indian health care: Separate, unequal" includes death rate statistics for the different regions of the Indian Health Service. Accidents are highest on the Navajo Reservation, alcoholism is tops in the Aberdeen area and diabetes rates in Tucson, Arizona, beat out the pack. In all cases, the rates surpass the rest of the United States. IHS spending per patient is also low, at $1,920 annually. The amount for the privately insured is $4,930. The proposed IHS budget for fiscal year 2003 is $3 billion. Get the Story:
