The debate whether regular mammograms can help prevent breast cancer is spreading from medical journals to the women's and health community at large.

A study published last fall in Lancet, British medical journal, said that mammograms only provided a small benefit. But using the same data, reseachers for another study being published today say that screening can help in the long run.

The dispute has lead health groups to take out advertisements encouraging screening. Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski (D-Md.) and Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) are planning hearings to discuss the issue.
