Goshute nuclear hearings continue

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 24, 2002

The Atomic Safety and Licensing Board is continuing hearings on a proposed nuclear waste storage facility on the Skull Valley Goshute Reservation in Utah.

The hearings are part of the board's licensing and approval process. The tribe and Private Fuel Storage (PFS), a consortium of private utilities, want to store up to 40,000 tons of nuclear waste for at least 20 years.

At a hearing held yesterday, opponents said a railroad line to the facility would hurt the North Cedar Mountains. Environmentalists want the land declared a wilderness area but the Bureau of Land Management has declined.
