Conservationists are opposing a proposed land swap between the National Park Service and the Eastern Band of Cherokees of North Carolina.

The tribe wants to exchange 218 acres of land with the NPS. The NPS would transfer 168 acres within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The land would then be used to construct school buildings for the tribe. Scoping meetings were held earlier this year with an environmental analysis expected in August.
