ANWR amendment delayed in Senate

FRIDAY, APRIL 12, 2002 Senate Republicans will introduce their proposal to allow drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge next Tuesday. The proposal will be offered as an amendment to the energy bill currently under debate. Democrats authored the package and didn't allow for a chance to debate on development. Nevertheless, Republicans don't yet have 60 votes to break a filibuster promised by Democrats. The Washington Post also cites a Reuters poll which found drilling wouldn't pass by a simple majority. Sen. Frank Murkowski (R-Alaska) will introduce the amendment. Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) tried to argue this week that drilling is mandated by the federal law which prohibited drilling unless authorized by Congress. Get the Story:
