WEDNESDAY, MARCH 20, 2002 In response to numerous lawsuits, the Bush administration has proposed to scale back endangered species protections. The feeling on behalf of the agencies involved is they are on the losing side of the battle. The latest rollbacks affect species in Western states, where the real estate industry has challenged habitat designations that limit development. Property-rights groups have also sued, resulting in the need to reconsider how fish in the Pacific Northwest are added to the endangered species list. Tribes in the area have treaty rights to fish and depend on them for subsistence and cultural purposes. Get the Story:
