Secretary of Interior Gale Norton's claim that drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge will create more than 700,000 jobs is being questioned by economists and her own allies.

Labor unions that have joined with Norton to promote drilling cite a low figure of 250,000 jobs, based on a Department of Energy study. The Teamsters Union says the high would be 735,000 jobs.

Other government studies and independent economists put the number on the low end. Environmentalists claim the number of new jobs would be 50,000.
