A day after her department held a consultation session with tribal leaders, Secretary of Interior made her first official visit to the Coachella Valley in southern California.

Among other stops, Norton toured the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto National Monument along with local officials and politicians, including Richard Milanovich, chairman of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. According to The Palm Springs Desert Sun, Milanovich spoke to Norton about the proposed reorganization of trust responsibilities.

Deputy Secretary J. Steven Griles accompanied Norton. Neither attended the consultation in San Diego.
