FRIDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2001 There may have been enough votes to push a pro-Arctic drilling bill through a Senate committee, but there are not enough to break a potential filibuster, Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) said on Thursday. Stevens says 51 Senators would approve an amendment opening up the Arctic National Wildife Refuge to oil and gas development. Stopping a filibuster being threatened by Democrats needs 60 votes, however, he noted. Some Republicans, including Sen. Frank Murkowski (R-Alaska), are angry Democratic leaders pulled an energy bill from the Enegy and Natural Resources Committee after learning a majority of panel members would approve Arctic drilling.
