FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2001 The Bureau of Indian Affairs and five other federal agencies will be working together to clean up the Tar Creek Superfund site in Oklahoma. Oklahoma and federal officials met on Thursday in Washington, DC, to discuss coordination of the $70 million cleanup. Much of the land involved is owned by members of the Quapaw Tribe. The land contains mine waste known as chat. It has been linked to higher than normal levels of lead in children. The BIA recently lifted a moratorium on the sale of chat. Chat can be used safely for industrial purposes. Get the Story:
