Protesters angry about the denial of water in the Klamath River Basin held back on reopening the headgates of a canal in Oregon on Thursday.

Previously, protesters had broken into the canal to restore water to their farms. More than 1,000 farmers have been denied water in order to protect fish in the basin.

The Bureau of Reclamation, part of the Department of Interior, is shutting off water to the farmers to fulfill trust responsibilities to area tribes.

The Klamath basin spans the Oregon-California border.
