Klamath water war continues

TUESDAY, AUGUST 14, 2001 Representatives from tribes, farmers and environmental groups are meeting today with the Department of Interior to discuss a dispute over water in the Klamath Basin. Tribes and environmentalists want more water to protect endangered and threatened species of fish. Water for eagles is also desired. Farmers want water for agricultural purposes. After the Bureau of Reclamation, an agency of the Interior, made a decision to deny them water, they protested. In response, Secretary Gale Norton decided to release some water for the farmers. Some environmental groups subsequently filed lawsuit. The basin straddles the Oregon-California border. Get the Story:
