Tribe opposes Missouri River land transfer

MONDAY, AUGUST 13, 2001 The Yankton Sioux Tribe of South Dakota is opposing a proposed transfer of land from the US Army Corps of Engineers to the state. Chairwoman Madonna Archambeau says the 83,000 acres rightfully belongs to the tribe. She says a tribal delegation will be sent to a series of public hearings being held this week in North and South Dakota to dicuss the transfer. Other tribes are also opposing the transfer. The Crow Creek Sioux Tribe and the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe refused to participate in negotiations over the land transfer. Some land will be transferred to the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe and the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe. These transfers are not being discussed in the hearings. Get the Story:
