Norton releases water for angry farmers

WEDNESDAY, JULY 25, 2001 Secretary of Interior Gale Norton on Tuesday announced she will be releasing water from an Oregon lake to appease farmers angry they have been denied the scarce resource. In a decision supported by tribes in southern Oregon and northern California, the Bureau of Reclamation has denied the farmers water in order to protect endangered and threatened fish. In response, they have broken into canals to take the water. Norton is ordering the release of 70,000 to 75,000 acre-feet of water. An acre-foot is the amount of water that would cover an acre of land to a depth of 1 foot. Get the Story:
