Former Secretary of Interior Bruce Babbitt won't talk to the Los Angeles Times about a $200 million California land deal he is negotiating for the Hearst Corp.

Babbitt was hired by the company through his new law firm Latham & Watkins. He joined the Washington, DC, of the firm in January after leaving the Clinton administration.

The Hearst family says Babbitt is helping them come up with an environmentally friendly way to preserve and develop their ranch.

Prior to joining, Babbitt's firm was also hired by a developer who wants to build 3,000 homes in an area in California that environmentalists say is filled with rare plants and animals.

Since leaving office, Babbitt kept a low profile until Earth Day, when he crticized the Bush administration for its environmental decisions.
