Pueblo promises lawsuit against mine

JUNE 25, 2001 At a public hearing in New Mexico, Zuni Pueblo Governor Malcolm Bowekaty said his tribe will file a lawsuit if the state approves a permit for a coal mine near a sacred lake. Hydrologists hired by the tribe and for the Bureau of Indian Affairs say the 18,000-acre mine will disrupt the lake. Salt River Project, an Arizona company behind the mine, claims otherwise. The company wants to mine the coal for consumers in Phoenix. Get the Story:
