The federal government filed a lawsuit on Wednesday seeking up to $60 million to compensate the Penobscot Nation of Maine for environmental poisoning.

The claim was filed in bankruptcy court in Bangor. It seeks between $400,000 and $60 million in the event the Lincoln Pulp & Paper Co. shuts down a mill and is the site is placed on the Superfund list.

The claim states the tribe has suffered from a loss of sustenance fishing and culture because the paper mill has polluted the Penobscot River with dioxin and other toxic chemicals.
