MAY 17, 2001 A federal judge in Arizona on Tuesday approved construction of a power line to Mount Graham, consider sacred to a number of tribes in the Southwest. The judge said the power line is exempt from environmental and religious protection laws. The University of Arizona and the US Forest Service can now move forward with construction plans. Mount Graham has been the subject of numerous protests by tribes and environmentalists. It is the site of an observatory run by the school and is located in the Coronado National Forest.
