Effects on Cree Nation considered

APRIL 27, 2001 Cree from Manitoba, Canada, came to Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Wednesday to conflict one another over the effects of a hydropower company on the culture and way of life on the Pimicikamak First Nation. Lobbyists for the Pimicikamak said Manitoba Hydro has had a devastating effect on the environment and culture there. Leaders from the Nisichawayasihk First Nation and the Split Lake First Nation said the company wasn't entirely to blame. Either way, Xcel Energy has rejected a shareholder bid to cut its ties to Manitoba Hydro. Xcel contracts with Manitoba to provide power for consumers in the United States. Get the Story:
