THURSDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2001

The House Energy and Commerce Committee on Wednesday approved a bill directing the government to create tighter security measures on commercial nuclear plants and nuclear waste storage facilities.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission would be responsible for implementing the procedures, which include armed escorts for all waste shipments and regular inspections. The bill would also expand federal law on sabotage to crimes committed at nuclear facilities.

The measure would apply to the proposed Yucca Mountain facility in Nevada, which is opposed by tribes in the area and various state officials and lawmakers.
