No decision was made on Wednesday to allow a coal mine near Zuni Salt Lake, despite warnings sent by environmental groups and Zuni Pueblo of New Mexico.

A meeting between the Bureau of Land Management and the Bureau of Indian Affairs did occur, Mark Pfeifle, Secretary of Interior Gale Norton's press secretary, told The Santa Fe New Mexican. Pfeifle added that he knew of no document prepared at the meeting that would approve the mine.

Zuni Pueblo opposes the project, saying it would deplete the sacred lake of water. The lake is about 12 miles away from the proposed operation.

Salt River Project, an Arizona utility company, said it had no knowledge of the meeting.
