OCTOBER 20, 2000

The Senate on Thursday delayed a vote on the long-delayed Animas-La Plata (A-LP) project, a bill that would settle the water rights of Ute Tribes in Colorado.

Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo) has been pushing A-LP project, which was first authorized in 1968. The project was eventually incorporated into the water rights settlement of the Ute Mountain Ute and Southern Ute Indian Tribes and affects s water usage to the Navajo Nation in New Mexico.

Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wisconsin) has criticized the bill, saying it is too big. He is proposing three amendments to scale down the project, none objecting to the settlement of the tribe's rights.
