Roadless forest rules back in court

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2001

The Clinton administration's controversial roadless forest initiative was back in court on Monday.

Supporting a repeal of the rules is a coalition including the state of Idaho, the Kootenai Tribe, the timber industry and the snowmobile industry. They told the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals not to allow the Bush administration to move forward with the plan.

Environmentalists asked the court to let them go through. The rules protect nearly 60 million acres of federal forest land by limiting logging and road-building.
