A report is expected within the coming weeks on a proposal to extend the Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern Railroad through the Black Hills in South Dakota.

The $1.4 million proposal would require 300 miles of new tracks from the Black Hills to the Powder River Basin coal mines of Wyoming. About 600 miles of existing track would also be removed.

A coalition of tribes and farmers has joined in opposition to the project. The Department of Interior has weighed in negatively.

The National Surface Transportation Board will issue its final environmental impact statement on the project by the end of the year.
