Haskell Indian Nations University and adjacent wetlands where graves of former students have been located could be placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Haskell would first have to be nominated, which has not yet happened. But a local commission said it would support the designation.

Being on the list could derail plans to extend a highway through the wetlands. Haskell students, officials and tribes are opposing the project.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs has also expressed objections.
