The University of Nebraska at Lincoln is set to repatriate thousands of human remains to 16 tribes in the Plains today.

A private, reburial ceremony by the tribes is planned for Saturday at a cemetery, said the executive director of the Nebraska Commission on Indian Affairs. Representatives of the tribes have been at the school inventorying the remains, said Judi Morgan gaiashkibos.

The school in the 1960s incinerated and dumped the bones of Native ancestors. A memorial was dedicated earlier this month at the site where the bones were burned.

A specially-trained search dog uncovered bone fragments confirmed to be human. The school won't challenge whether they are Native or not.
