'Fighting Sioux' discussion set

JANUARY 25, 2001

National Indian Education Association President Carole Anne Heart will be among several Indian leaders headed to the University of North Dakota next month for a discussion on the school's "Fighting Sioux" nickname.

Tribal leaders in North Dakota and South Dakota are also being invited to the February 17 event. Three of the North Dakota's four Sioux tribes oppose using the name.

The state Board of Higher Education in December voted last month to keep it, trumping a decision by President Charles Kupchella. But Kupchella is keeping the issue open and said he wants to seek approval from the tribes.

Meanwhile, the school's only Norweigan instructor says she won't teach if benefactor Ralph Engelstad's money is used to support her program. Engelstad supports keeping the Sioux nickname and threatened to cut money to the school should they change it.
