State chooses Pueblo statue

NOVEMBER 9, 2000 Jemez Pueblo artist Cliff Fragua has been chosen to create a statue honoring Pueblo Revolt leader Pope. The statue will represent the state of New Mexico in the National Statuary Hall in Washington, DC. Each state gets two statues. Fragua was chosen by the state's Statuary Hall commission on Wednesday. He was among one of four artists who made a mock-up of their proposed statue. Pope was from San Juan Pueblo. He led the overthrow of the Spanish in 1680. Get the Story:
