Tribe blasts 'Fighting Sioux' decision

JANUARY 18, 2001 The Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Council on Tuesday passed a resolution condemming the South Dakota Board of Higher Education's decision to keep the University of North Dakota's "Fighting Sioux" nickname. The council also voted to boycott businesses affiliated with the nickname and logo. Their decision now makes difficult efforts by school President Charles Kupchella to convince tribes to support the name. Get the Story:
