The University of Michigan is defending its affirmative action policies in light of two lawsuits filed on behalf of white students who were denied admission.

The university supports affirmative action because they say diversity helps its students' education. They use a formula which increases the ratings of African-American, Hispanic, and Native American students during the admissions process.

The lawsuits were brought by a group which helped end affirmative action at the University of Texas law school in 1996.
