FRIDAY, JULY 25, 2003

The Senate should vote against Indian energy legislation that limits the federal government's liability because it "is dangerous to the country," The Farmington Daily Times says in an editorial.

The paper praises Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr. for taking a stand against the bill. "Shirley definitely had ;the right stuff' when he told the Navajo Council Monday in Window Rock, Ariz., 'Unfortunately, our trustee is ignorant of the treaty between us and who we are as a people and what trust responsibility means,'" the paper notes.

The paper also embraced comments Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-Conn.) made to the Navajo Nation council. "When you look at Bush and his policy toward Indian Country, it's like his policy toward the rest of the world — it’s one sided," he told tribal leaders and lawmakers.
