Obituary: Paul Bernal Taos Pueblo elder

FRIDAY, JULY 18, 2003 Paul Bernal, a Taos Pueblo elder who fought for return of the tribe's sacred Blue Lake, died Wednesday of natural causes. He was 90. Bernal was instrumental in the return of the lake, considered the ancestral home of the tribe. After attempts at a cash settlement were rejected, it was returned during the Nixon administration.
