Mesa Verde ruins threatened by several fires

THURSDAY, JULY 17, 2003 Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado is closed while crews try to battle several fires that are threatening ancient Puebloan villages and artifacts. The fires cover about 200 acres and are burning near some of the park's most important structures. Tribal sites date as far back as the 500s. Mesa Verde was hit by a large fire in 2000, which burned more than a third of the park's 52,000 acres. There was also a fire last year. Get the Story:
