After 127 years Indian memorial a reality

TUESDAY, JUNE 24, 2003

Some tribal members see the dedication of a memorial to the Indian warriors who fought at the Battle of Little Bighorn as the first step in a reconciliation process.

The memorial was authorized in 1990 but money for the $2.3 million project wasn't appropriated until 2001. Descendants of those who defeated Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer and members of his 7th Calvary on June 25, 1876, hope it will lead to resolution of issues like treaty rights.

The dedication takes place at the battle site in Montana.
