Navajo Nation First Lady received death threat

MONDAY, JUNE 16, 2003 Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr. said his wife has received a death threat, The Gallup Independent reports. Shirley is seeking to reactivate the tribe's presidential security unit. He has proposed spending more than $600,000 for a 10-member bodyguard detail. Shirley's predecessor did not use a security detail, the paper reports, instead relying on a tribal police unit on occasion Former president Kelsey Begaye spent $645 on security in the last three months of office, compared to the nearly $13,000 has spent since January.
