Suit filed over Pequot tribe's water authority

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 11, 2003

Three towns in Connecticut are suing the state for expanding the water authority of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation.

The towns of Ledyard, North Stonington and Preston contend the state has no authority to recognize the tribe's jurisdiction. They believe the decision will allow the tribe to expand its land base.

The towns sued the Department of Interior over a land-into-trust application for the tribe and are also challenging the federal recognition of another Pequot tribe.
