N.D. tribes still feel effects of dam project

TUESDAY, JUNE 10, 2003 In the 1950s, the federal government flooded valuable land on the Fort Berthold Reservation in North Dakota as part of a massive waterworks project along the Missouri River. The Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara tribes continue to feel the effects today. Tribal leaders opposed the project and offered alternatives that would have not impacted the reservation. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers went ahead and created the Garrison Dam, damaging important cultural and farming sites in the process. Congress passed a law to compensate the tribes for the effects of the dam. The amount was $149.2 million. Get the Story:
